KRK, an
island in the Kvarner Archipelago, the largest island of the Adriatic Sea;
area 409 sq km (38 km lenght, width up to 20 km); population 16,402. North
of the narrow part at the line Vrbnik - Punat spreads the lower, forested,
more fertile and populated part of the island. The higher, southern part, is
predominantly bare, interspersed with thick forests. |

BASKA, a town and port on the south-eastern coast of the island of Krk,
located in the northern part of Baska Draga. Fertile tracts of land in the
Baska Draga valley, through which runs the Suha Ricina (Big Dry River) or
Vela Rika (Big River), have enabled farming (wheat), fishing, viniculture,
as well as making and selling of wine, which in turn, has given rise to
maritime and shipbuilding industries. Next to the old, compact part of the
town, a new part with tourist facilities has been built, making Baska a
well-known tourist destination. |

island of Krk. Chief occupations are farming, fishing and tourism.
Originally a small village in the region of Dubasnica, Malinska developed as
a port at the beginning of the 19th century, when the export of wood was
transferred from Porto to the cove of Malinska because of a better road
connection for transportation of wood from the island's interior. |

OMISALJ, a town and port in the north-western part of the island of Krk.
Chief occupations are
farming, fishing, chemicals and tourism. A tanker terminal is located in the
Omisalj Bay. Lies on the local road which is connected with the regional
road running from the Bridge of Krk to Baska. - Airport "Rijeka" is situated
near Omisalj. |

SILO, a village and port on the eastern coast of the northern part of the
island of Krk, in the cove of Stipanja, opposite of Crikvenica.
The cove is protected
from south and east winds by a narrow and low peninsula, which ends in the
cape of the same name. Economy is based on farming and fishing. Silo is
connected with the interior of the island of Krk by a regional road. |
